Buenos Aires, December 16 (NA) - The Federation of Workers in the Oilseed, Cotton Ginning and Related Industries Complexes (FTCIODyARA) called for a national strike in the oilseed and cotton ginning sectors for December 18, within the framework of the mobilization driven by the CGT against the labor reform bill that the national government seeks to advance in Congress.
From the union, they explained that the measure aims to ensure the presence of all workers in the protest and described the strike as an act of "self-defense" against a project that, they stated, attacks essential labor rights and favors a minority of businessmen.
The Argentine Chamber of the Oilseed Industry (CIARA) responded with a communiqué rejecting the measure, considering it a "political strike" and warning that it "will proceed to take all measures established by law".
In this regard, the union stated that the National Constitution and current legislation guarantee the right to strike, and that any sanctions or reprisals would constitute a violation of fundamental rights.
In its position, the federation recognized the political nature of the measure and reclaimed it, stating that politically motivated strikes are protected by the federal block of rights, based on rulings from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Finally, the union leadership ratified the call for the strike and warned that it will respond with unity and class consciousness to any attempt at reprisal, while calling to reject a reform that —they ensured— "worsens the working and living conditions of the majority of the population".
